    Goth Culture

    • Goth culture has different music, art and literature to all other cultures.
    • There is an extended use of black clothing, light coloured makeup, unique hair cuts, body piercing, bondage items, etc.
    • Goths tend to have a fascination with medieval, Victorian and Edwardian history.
    • Goth's like to wear symbols, for example the Christian cross.
    • Goths are mostly non-violent, pacifistic, passive, and tolerant.
    • Many Goths write about being depressed. Followers seem sullen and withdrawn, when in public. They are often much more "happy and carefree in the company of [other] Goths."

    • "A lot of people turn to the Gothic subculture after having a difficult time in school, feeling alienated, and looking for a way to express themselves that  mirrors those feelings. Others find the scene through literature, still others want to be shocking."
    • Goth music often concerns thought-provoking themes, concentrating on societal evils, like racism, war, hatred of groups, etc. Their music tends to concentrate on the very "nasty, unhappy" topics that "North American culture" wants to "ignore and forget."
    • Goths have a serious obsession with death. They try "to find a different way of thinking about life, like trying to find beauty in life, pain and death. It's all a quest for immortality."
    • However, many Goths are optimistic about the future and see much beauty in the world.
    • Some Goths enjoy playing role play games.
    • Goths also like to read books by authors like Dante, Byron, Tolstoy; German Expressionist silent films; writing music; painting, etc.

    Goth Accessories

Goth culture is great for those individuals who like to dress up and accessorise with statement pieces. Most Goths tend to wear bondage/pvc pants with many complex straps hanging from various places at different lengths.
Many goths also accessories with wearing leather arm/cuff details and spikey/ lace dog collars.
The most common accessory themes among goths are crucifixes, spikes, studs, and safety pins.
Another goth statement of accessory and identification is to paint your nails black.

    Goth Hairstyle

    1. Gothic hair is usually dyed black or highlighted with a hint of colour and is styled in a certain way. Goth hair can be long or short, as long as it is styled right. If you are thinking about going 'Goth' and you portray dark brown hair, I would suggest just going all out and dyeing your hair black and spiking it up with some hairspray, mousse and gel. If you have long blonde hair, put a witchy black streak in it, or bleach it so it's strikingly blonde and streak it with some neon blue. Both men and women Goths are fans of dark hair with streaks of different colours such as blues, purples, blondes, browns and pinks.

    Goth Makeup

Goth makeup mainly includes making yourself pale. A pale complexion usually suggesting the ghoulish pallor of the undead.

To create a pale face it is suggested to combine a white foundation primer with a regular foundation that matches your natural skin tone.It is not advised to buy fancy dress makeup as although it is cheap it looks unrealistic.

Although you don't have to make yourself pale to be a goth, because there are other makeup aspects that are even more important. These include dark lipstick, dark eyeliner under and on top of the eyes and also heavy dark eyeshadow.

    Goth Fashion

The main fashion aspect of Goth that you need to know is to... wear black. Goths also wear other colours such as dark purple, blues and blood red. But a pale base with darkness is the most common. Other fashion ideas around a 'gothic look' is the idea of 'up cycling'. This can be as simple as cutting up a pair of tights.

Common women's gothic items include corsets, fishnet tights, ripped shirts, long dresses, long shirts and mini skirts.
Common men's items are torn t-shirts, combat boots, band tees, dark trousers, bondage pants and studded belts.
A black t-shirt displaying a known gothic band with black jeans is just as dressing "goth" as an elaborate vampire get-up.

However, both goth men and women are fans of the tall lace up black boot. These come in different lengths and different tie numbers, also in different sole thicknesses.

    Goth Music

Most goths listen to a diversity of sub-genres with the word "goth" in the title, but there are also a lot of goths who listen to industrial music, electronic music, metal, and classical music.
    • Often, "goth music" refers to a particular style of rock music from the 80's, featuring a heavy use of synthesizers, jangly guitar, reverb, and monotone vocals.
    •  When music is described as gothic it is referring to the tone, attitude, and the lyrical content.
    • Goth music can be described as eerie, surreal, or dark, but it's also largely catchy and listenable pop music at its core.
    • The lyrics of gothic music often explore dark themes and goth bands, usually dressed in black clothes with spiky black hair.

    History of Goth Music

Many assign the August 1979 launch of Bauhaus's "Bela Lugosi's Dead" with the birth of the contemporary goth subculture. The song was recorded in a bat cave which later became a nightclub in London for goths and goth rock bands in the early 1980s. While the aesthetic and stylistic roots of the music can be traced to the drones of the Velvet Underground's 1966 debut The Velvet Underground & Nico, the term "goth" became an identifier of genre around 1983.
    • Other early iconic goth rock bands included Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Fields of the Nephilim, The Mission, Christian Death, Alien Sex Fiend and The March Violets.
    • Most bands took influence from post-punk, punk rock, Gothic literature, horror films and glam rock like David Bowie. This genre of music got some mainstream recognition in 1983 when the gothic horror film "The Hunger" came out. Other Gothic films include Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' and The Pit and Pendulum.
    • Contemporary goth-influenced bands include The XX, Wax Idols, and TV Ghost.

"Browne's interpretation of gothic fashion lies in the rendering of the traditional Burtonian outfits. The nets, so charming and popular on the latest runways, slightly make the look appear like one fit for a funeral. "
