    Hippie Origin

The Hippie Movement was a countercultural movement of the 1960s that rejected the conventions of mainstream American life. The movement started on college campuses in the United States but spread to other countries such as Canada and Britain. The word 'Hippie' was obtained from 'hip', a term given to the Beats of the 1950s, such as Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, who were considered to be the fathers of the hippies.Although the movement began as opposition to U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War (1955-75), hippies were not directly engaged in politics.

    Hippie Culture

Hippies favoured nonviolence and love with their most common slogan being "Make love, not war", for which the were sometimes called "Flower Children". Hippies promoted openness and tolerance as alternatives to the restrictions and regimentation they saw in middle-class society.Hippies often applies themselves to open sexual relationships and lived in diverse family groups. they frequently sought spiritual guidance from sources outside the Judo-Christian tradition, particularly Buddhism and other Eastern Religions, and sometimes in various combinations.

Astrology was popular among hippies, and the period was often referred to as the Age of Aquarius. Hippies advanced the recreational use of hallucinogenic drugs, particularly marijuana and LSD, in so called head trips, justifying the practice as a way of expanding consciousness. The use of drugs predominantly were used at festivals that hippies attended such as Woodstock.

Hippies commonly took up communal living arrangements, and often adopted vegetarian diets based on unprocessed foods and practiced holistic medicine. For many The Whole Earth Catalog, which first appeared in 1968, became a source for the necessities of life.
Hippies tended to be dropouts from society, forgoing regular jobs and careers, although some developed small businesses that catered to other hippies.

Hippies felt isolated from middle-class society, which they saw as dominated by materialism and repression, something they weren't interested in. Hippies realised they had developed their own distinctive lifestyle, different from the rest of their middle-class society.

    Hippie Jewellery/ Accessories

Hippie jewellery and accessories featured gems/ bindies on the face, peace sign necklaces, earrings and bracelets, flower head pieces and sometimes aztec print pieces e.g bracelet.

    Hippie Hairstyle

For both men and women hippies the most common hairstyle was to have long wavy hair. In a sense this was like having your hair ' O Natural'. Hippies mostly had their hair down and usually had flowery head pieces and bandannas in it.

    Hippie Makeup

Hippie makeup was quite simplistic and natural. However, gems and birdies were integrated into common hippie makeup.

Hippies made more effort with their makeup for larger gatherings/ festivals such as Woodstock and would even use face and body paint for these types of events.

Hippies did opt for eye drama though. Most would use a bit of nude eyeshadow on their eyelids creating a smooth, natural finish. They also applied a dark brown cream eyeliner to the top of their lash line. They used mascara on their top eyelashes but not on their bottom ones,. This created a natural wide-eyed fresh makeup-free effect.

    Hippie Fashion

Hippies preferred to have long hair and casual dress, sometimes in "psychedelic" colours. Lots of males grew beards, and both men and women wore sandals and beads. Long flowing granny like floral dresses were popular with women, and rimless granny glasses with both men and women.

Flares and bold flowery prints and patterns were common among Hippies.

Hippies wore tie dye'd psychedelic pattern tees and clothing. These were bright primary coloured tops full of different patterns.

    Hippie Music/ Icons

Hippies used music to explore themselves spiritually, emotianally and politically.  Music gave them a statement and a voice to there movement; it united people. As they explored their inner world, music directed them  along their quest for meaning. Heavy use of drugs enabled artists to create music with an open mind.

Both folk and rock music were an integral part of hippie culture. Singers such as Bob Dylan and Joan Baez and groups such as the Beatles, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Rolling Stones were among those most closely identified with the movement.

    Hippie Films/ Programmes

There are many films that have influenced and put a stamp on Hippie Culture. The musical Hair, was a celebration of the hippie lifestyle, opened on Broader in 1968. The film Easy Rider which reflected hippie values and aesthetics appeared in 1969. The novelist Ken Kesey was one of the best-known literary spokesmen for the movement.

    ASHISH A/W 12

Ashish's collection A/W 12 was very  90s-heavy, with the smiley face, yin and yang and many modern hippie references that channelled a Brit on a 'Gap Yah' style adventure.
