Subculture 4 Hip Hop.

hip hop
noun

  1. a style of popular music of US black and Hispanic origin, featuring rap with an electronic backing.

Hip Hop Culture

Hip Hop Culture first came about in the late 1970s in the poorest districts of New York City by African American and Latino teenagers. For Hip Hop culture young people gathered in parks, playgrounds and street corners. The Hip Hop scene brought about break dancing and graffiti art. Many of these young teenagers were jobless, but managed to find work as DJs in discos where they learnt  how to use dj mixer's to play records etc. Mostly they would DJ at free block parties in their neighbourhoods where they'd play funk and disco tracks and ask a friend to be their MC. The MC's job was to introduce the DJ, encourage the dancing and provide entertainment that eventually brought about rap culture.

Hip Hop Hairstyle

Hip Hop hair for men and women feature many different funky styles, mainly around afro hairstyle including plaits and braids.  Many photoshoots feature women hair being gelled to the side of their face in a curl.

Hip Hop Fashion and Accessories

Hip Hop fashion included wearing baggy clothing, such as oversized trackuit bottoms/ tops. The 'baseball' type sports jacket and cap combination was also brought into fashion during this time and culture with the emergence of girl group 'Salt N Pepa' and their fashion. Hip Hop fashion also included many types of branded sneakers.
Baggy clothing

Hip Hop accessories and style included wearing many gold chains around your neck, usually with a dollar sign hanging off it.  Medallions were popular but also gold rings, watches and bracelets.

One aspect i noticed is that girls often wore denim including dungarees with a brand t-shirt combination such as a Tommy Hilfiger logo top. Many stylists in photoshoots would wrap shirts and tie them around the waist, creating layers.

Hip Hop Makeup

Hip Hop makeup was bold and vibrant. It usually focused on the eyes and the lips. Primary colours and gold combinations were common.

Hip Hop Music/ Icons

In the 1970s, Hip Hop, an underground urban movement began to develop in the South Bronx in NY City. It focused on emceeing, breakbeats and house parties. Jamaican born DJ CLIVE 'Kool Herc' Campbell was highly influential in the pioneering stage of hip hop music.

Now, hip hop music was brought success with Kanye West in the 2000s. Hip Hop music is rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping and a rhythmic speech that is chanted.

Salt n Pepa

The trio released several successful albums in the late 1980s and '90s, including A Salt with a Deadly Pepa and Blacks' Magic, which provided such hits as "Let's Talk About Sex," "Shoop" and "Whatta Man." They are iconic for their baseball look jackets, chains and cap mix in bold primary colours such as yellow, red, green and black.

Tupac

Tupac was an American rapper and a hip hop legend with explicit and controversial lyrics. Most of Tupac's songs were about growing up amid violence and hardship in ghetto, racism, other social problems and conflicts with other rappers during the East Coast-West Coast hip hop rivalry.

Hip Hop Films/ TV Programmes

His only way out of the ghetto and torturous life he's living in is with his talent of rapping, which many youngers growing up in the hip hop environment can relate to.

Hip Hop Styled Photoshoots/ Fashion Collections

RIHANNA I-D MAGAZINE PRE-SPRING 15. BY PAOLO ROVERSI.

To me, this shoot of Rhianna screams Hip Hop. The use of denim as a two piece and the way it is styled by twisting round the body really reminds me of hip hop culture. It's the clothes, the hair, the makeup, the pose, and the background that gives the hip hop nature away.

Rhianna is posed wearing gold hoop earrings, denim clothing, gold eyeshadow, bold lipstick, with many funky braids falling down her face.

Hip Hop inspired Fashion Collections

Alexander Wang Spring 2013

Alexander Wang's Spring 2013 collection portrayed a  sporty aesthetic. Boxy shirts and bermuda shorts were sliced and diced into strips, then fused back together with fishing line, providing peaks of sexy skin under boyish silhouettes.

Moschino Fall/Winter 2015-16

What inspired me about the above picture from Moschino's Fall/ Winter 2015 collection was the use of colour. Bold primary colours were used in quilted material featuring many different cuts, included crop tops and skirts. The use of cap style hats in these bold primary colours also adds to the whole sense of hip hop style.

Within my research i found a lot of girls in hop hop culture wear denim, and denim mixes and two pieces. So i found this collection from Moschino and i fell in love. I love the patchwork denim mixed with rich gold and the use of gold chains. Again the cap mixed with the clothing really draws attention to hip hop colour and pulls to the richness of the colour gold in the patchwork.

Frankie Morello S/S 2013

Frankie Morello (Italian Fashion) celebrated ghetto style with this spring summer 2013 collection. Inspiration came from styling of rapper,s hip hoppers, breakdancers, basketball players, gangsters etc. The collection featured the 'American Ghetto' with elements of multi ethnic and culture.

The collection featured oversized volumes in black and white enlightened by gold elements, flat peaked caps, metal mesh, gold chains and python print leather and nylon are mixed with super-bleached denim, rap quotes and graffiti- effect graphics.
